Public Boat Ramps

As you can imagine, boating and fishing is a popular activity on the Outer Banks. Whether you are out enjoying dinner or taking a cruise with family or friends, the Outer Banks has plenty of ocean to enjoy. If you are an Outer Banks resident or have a vacation home in the area, then maybe you own aboat. If not, don’t worry, there are many places to rent a boat or jump on a fishing charter.


Public boat ramps are all over the Outer Banks; making it very easy for anyone to launch their boat. All of the following boat ramps are free to use and do not require a permit.


1. Dare County Public Boat Ramp:

This ramp is right off Bob Perry Road. The canal to the sound is only 200 feet long and has a depth of about 5 feet.

2. North Carolina Wildlife Boat Ramp:

Located in Kill Devil Hills right off Bay Drive. This dock is recommended only for shallow draft vessels.

3. National Park Service Boat Ramp @ Oregon Inlet:

This public ramp is located at the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center off of Highway 12.

4. Fish & Wildlife Boat Ramp:

This is a great dock for recreational fishing. It is located right on the west side of Washington Baum Bridge, directly across from Pirate’s Cove Marina.

5. Dare County Boat Ramp:

This ramp is located in the heart of Dare County between the Fisherman’s Wharf Restaurant and Moon Tillett’s Fish Company. Parking is very limited at this ramp, depending on commercial activity.

6. Fish & Wildlife Boat Ramp:

This large boat ramp is located in Manteo on Roanoke Island. There is enough parking for about 30 vehicles. The dock is located on California Street.

7. Dare County Public Boat Ramp:

This ramp is located adjacent to the bridge that leads to Roanoke Island Festival Park. This ramp has very limited parking.

Summer Deals


Summer is half way over and there is not a better time to visit the Outer Banks. The weather is beautiful, people are out and about, and there are plenty of festivities for all to participate in. Now is also a perfect time to get a great deal on a rental home.

With the 2nd half of summer here, you can find great deals on rentals that have not yet been booked. There are plenty of rentals still available from the Southern tip of Nags Head all the way north to the Ocean Hill villages. Check out a listing of communities and properties available by town, here. If you plan on traveling in August, look out for specially discounted rates for the week of August 15th.

When planning your summer trip to the Outer Banks, make sure to look up all of the activities and festivities taking place. There is always an abundance of events in addition to the everyday activities like beach going, bike riding, hiking, water sports, golfing and fishing, to name a few. Check out the list of local activities and find out where and how to indulge.

Once you’re done with your daily activities, make sure to take advantage of the local cuisine. Scattered throughout the Outer Banks are some amazing restaurants that really highlight the local taste. Look through the list of restaurants and see what catches your eye.

July 4th in the Outer Banks

With so much of the country’s history located in the Outer Banks, July 4th is a special holiday here. There are a bunch of festivities taking place throughout the barrier islands. Here’s a list of all the 4th of July activities taking place in the Outer Banks.

The Whalehead Club 16th Annual Independence Day Festival of Fireworks

Taking place from 6pm to 11pm. There’s plenty of food, fun and entertainment for the whole family. The event is free and is sponsored by Currituck County. The fireworks begin at dusk, so make sure to get there early to get a good seat. Don’t forget to bring your blanket or beach chairs.

Duck’s Annual 4th of July Parade

The parade starts at 9am and is a one mile event that starts on Scarborough Lane and continues down Ocean Way and then Christopher Drive. After the parade, make sure to stop by Town Park for some music by Ruth Wyand and friends.

Fourth of July Celebration: Patriotic Music

This event begins at 8pm at the Outdoor Pavilion at Roanoke Island Festival Park. The event is sponsored by the North Carolina School of the Arts and is free to attend. There will be plenty of music and fireworks to help celebrate.

Nags Head 4th of July Fireworks Display

The 13th annual Independence Day fireworks spectacular starts at 9:25pm on the ocean pier at mile post 11.5 on NC Route 12. The fireworks presentation will be given by the famous Bay Fireworks of New York. Guests can expect a spectacular show.

The fireworks display will be visible all over Nags Head. The following public beaches are recommended for access to the beach to view the fireworks.
