Blackbeard – The Pirate Menace

While the Outer Banks of North Carolina are widely known for their historical charms, many visitors are unaware of the local pirating that took place in the 18th century. One of the most infamous pirates to sail the waters of the Outer Banks was Edward Teach – known throughout the history books as Blackbeard the Pirate.

Blackbeard was a notorious pirate, recognized from the banks of Maryland to the beaches of Florida as a ruthless cutthroat. He was known to the seafaring as ‘the devil himself’ – an image amplified by his black clothes and an affinity for keeping lit matches in his hair. (The slow burning matches created smoke around him, adding to the illusion.)

Edward Teach would retire to the Outer Banks of North Carolina
between exploits as the shallow shores and proximity to trade routes made the location a pirate haven. Blackbeard was killed and beheaded during his quest to fortify Ocracoke as a homebase for pirates and other outlaws.

Elan Vacations encourages visitors to lean more about the historical and legendary figures that have highlighted the Outer Banks’ past. With multiple rental locations throughout the area, you can set up your own pirate haven to explore the beaches, meet the locals, and perhaps even find some buried treasure…
